Best Canadian University for International Students: Toronto, York, Waterloo or Ryerson

Best Canadian University for International Students: Toronto, York, Waterloo or Ryerson?
I'm looking to take a Postgraduate Tourism, Marketing or IT Management-related course :) MA or Grad Dip level. Kindly review the schools based on these criteria: - good programs for international students - great Engineering/ Business courses - one that is reputable but not too competitive... I want to learn in a good institution but don't want to be buried in books all day. Right now, I'm leaning towards UNIVERSITY of WATERLOO or RYERSON UNIVERSITY. Also, if you have additional time, kindly advise me on the status of the ff. in the schools you will mention: - part-time employment opportunities for students - great international student population - employment opportunities/ placement/ professional networking after graduation - extra-curricular activities and parties :) Thanks so much for your advice! [===================] I want to hear about reputations of schools from residents themselves. Because I hear from school recruiters/ websites all the time and of course, they tend to oversell their schools. I want to hear about what's more or less the general outlook on these schools. Thanks again!

If you google each school, you will see the criteria and the grades you will need. Canadian universities only recruit on top academics and I can't think of any with PG Tourism. That's usually done at a community college in Canada.

2
Waterloo and Toronto have reps as very serious schools. Ryerson may have more of the kind of courses you want. Check Macleans Magazine and the Globe and Mail for their surveys. www.macleans.ca/universities/ www.macleans.ca/education/rankings.jsp www.globecampus.ca/

I'm a UW grad and I still work there part time... the programs your interested in seem to have more a business slant to them, I would direct you to one of the big business universities ie. western or laurier for the management type programs. With regards to toursim that is a college pursuit typically. I think you should be looking at post grad. programs at colleges...

Thinking about going back to school, which degree should I get

Thinking about going back to school, which degree should I get?
I graduated with a BA in Social Services (an individualized degree) a couple years back. It really hasn't gotten me anywhere and I am someone's assistant in a job that doesn't even cover my bills. I am thinking about going back to school and looking at outlooks/earnings, my likes, etc, I've decided maybe either: Getting a BS in Human Resource Management OR a MA in Psychology. Does anyone have any advice or thoughts? I don't really have anyone to talk to about what would be best for me and my daughter's future. Thanks everybody. I'm now leaning more towards getting my MSN - Masters in Nursing. MBA would result in a job I would not enjoy. My heart is in helping people. Now to figure out financing the pre reqs!

human resource or industrial relations out of that two, or get a teaching certificate and the psych degree

2
Getting a second bachelor's degree is a waste of time. You want to move up, not sideways. Go for the MA.

3
Well if you want more "professional" advice I would go to one of the schools you might be interested in going to, and discussing with an advisor... Oftentimes they have a type of "career center" or even an adult services office that can help you try and deduce what you would want to do. For most, the correlation seems to be that the higher the degree, the better off you are, so since you already have a BA you may as well go forward with the MA, which could open up more opportunities for you. Like someone else said, you'd want to move up - not to the side. That, and a BS degree would probably require more work over a longer period of time (4 years usually), and if you are concerned about earning a better salary sooner, then perhaps a masters -- however more challenging -- will be a faster route, as it takes about 2 or so years.

4
I'd rather you get an MA in HRM. A BS in HRM won't do anything for you that your current BA isn't doing. An MA in psych - would you be employable after that? In what job? Another option would be to get an MBA. You could do an MBA with an HR concentration. If your plan is to go to school full time, you'll do an internship in the field. But if part time, you need to find other ways to gain related work experience while you study. If you go for an MA or MBA in HR, then speak to your current employer about taking on more HR-style responsibilities. It's the degree backed up with experience that will let you make this career transition, so you need to gain some related experience, on the job or elsewhere. Volunteer work could help as well, especially if you can't gain HR related experience at your job. No matter what, go to a reputable school. It can be a local state school, but since you're doing this for career purposes, I want you to avoid those for-profit/proprietary/famous for being online schools. So many employers violently dislike those that I'd really rather you look elsewhere.

5
Another bachelor's is a waste of time. Get a masters. Do note though an MA in psych is useless. You need a PhD to get anywhere in psych. Just go and get an MBA and be done with it.

I KNOW THIS MIGHT SOUND STUPID, BUT I SUGGEST ANGER MANAGEMENT CLASSES. YOU DON'T NEED THEM IT'S NOT SERIOUS LIKE MINE, IM THE PSYCHO PATH I ACTUALLY GRAB A KNIFE OR SOMETHING AND MAKE THREATS. SO THAT IS AN OPTION

2
I get very angry really fast too! Just try and relax and breath and try and do something that will calm you such as exercise or listening to music! Try and not let the small things in life bother you and just try and go with the flow! If you still feel like you are very angry all the time, you could always seek help from a professional (: Hope I helped!

3
To help yourself, have hope and pray about your life. Tell God about it. God is love. Know that God can help you live a better life. You can have a personal relationship with God by saying the prayer below. God is our Creator, all-knowing, all-powerful, eternal, holy, love. God loves us and sent us His Son, Jesus Christ, so we can go to heaven if we know and follow Him. Forever means without end -- time on and on without death. Forever is what happens after we die. Either we go to heaven and be with God forever, or we go to hell which is very bad and painful forever. The good people who are saved believers in Jesus Christ go to heaven. The bad people go to hell. We need to know and follow God in this world to get to heaven in the next world. We follow God by loving and obeying Him and loving others for Him. Jesus Christ, God's Son, is our bridge to God. Jesus died on the cross to cancel our sins. We need to accept Jesus into our life as our Lord and Savior forever to receive God's blessing and forgiveness plus go to heaven to be with God forever after we die. This is about being a born-again Christian. Faith in God is a gift from God. You can pray for faith in God. Just speak out and ask God for the faith to believe in Him and to follow Him. Some people find faith in God when they realize the beauty in the world is made by God. Evolution can't explain the world's natural beauty, for example, the parks in the world, animals, flowers, peacocks, sunsets, butterflies, rainbows, etc. After you have your faith on, you can pray a sinner's prayer to be a born-again Christian. This prayer is very important and should be said with a sincere heart and faith in God. This is the prayer: "Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and that Jesus Christ is the sacrifice for our sins. I have done the following sins (state these out) and I pray to discontinue these sins. I pray to receive Jesus Christ into my life as my Lord and Savior forever. In Jesus' name, amen." I'm Lutheran and I like the Baptist churches too. You could check out a Christian church youth group or Bible study group to learn about God's will for your life. You can pray to God about your daily life and have a Christian church pray for you.

Where can I go to college for the majors i'm interested in

Where can I go to college for the majors i'm interested in?
I am looking to major in either "Wildlife and Wildlands Science and Management" or " Natural Resources and Conservation". I would prefer to attend school in Boston or the surrounding area because I live in Bridgewater, MA and wish to commute. I have searched on collegeboard.com for these majors and have found quite a few close to my area, but on the college's actual websites they are not listed. If someone could please help me out it would be greatly appreciated. I am already interested in Suffolk University, Simmons, and even Bristol Community College and would like assurance that these majors exist at these schools.

either they have it or they don't. That's pretty much the story. I hate to say this, but, I dont' think you'll find it up there. At least close. If you want to stay in New England, I'd look at like New Hampshire or up there. Your school counselor should be able to do this. They have the knowledge and the contacts.

2
Your list of majors suggests you're unrealistic. In the Real World, people gets jobs like "Evening Shift Manager at McDonalds" - not "Wildlife Hero". Forget the romantic save-the-world stuff. Just get a solid classic university education in one of the Humanities - if you don't want to do the hard work of getting a degree in the Sciences.

Moving into "Avalon Shrewsbury" in MA. Any feedback/comments?
Hello, Due to the foreclosure of my home I am looking out for townhouse / 2 bed room apartment in metro-west area. I have seen some apts including Avalon Shrewsbury and I find it to be good. Since I need to finalize an apartment within a month, I would appreciate if someone can provide feedback about the apartment/management as well as location? Tx Jackie

uhhh....

I am an ex-resident of Avalon Shrewsbury. It is a decent apt. located in a nice location. But rent is expensive. Everything was good till we gave the final move-out notice. Once you decide to move out they will find way too many reasons to levy penalty and rob your security deposit. They will do micro-inspection and find fault with almost everything, even though you maintain the apartment very neat and clean. It seems their strategy is to utilize the so-called "refundable security deposit" for the renovation of new apartment. When you read the move-out check list all the pleasant experience will vanish into thin air. Personally I haven’t seen such a bad behavior with any other apartment management. I am not sure if there is any change in the management in the past 1-2 years. There are plenty of decent apt in Shrewsbury including Haynes Farms, Shrewsbury Commons etc and personally I will not recommend Avalon. It is a rip-off in the name of luxury apartments.

3
I agree with the above comment. Being a mother of 2 kids, we maintained the apartment crisp and clean. But ultimately at the time of our move-out, during inspection they marked almost every item in the exhaustive checklist as dirty. It was a shock to end up losing the deposit $$. It is disgusting to see the exhaustive move-out checklist marked with their nasty comments. The attitude of Avalon Shrewsbury management is very clear from their documents... When you sign-in the lease document it says "NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR" is acceptable. But the final move-out notice says "APARTMENT SHOULD BE RETURNED AS-IS". What a change in behavior :( You cannot argue / negotiate for every point noted in the checklist... coz they mark 90% of the items as not clean or dirty. When you move-in property manager will walk you through the apartment and make you hurry up to sign the move-in form. So if you still decide to move-in, note two things. 1. Take your own time to note down every minute details in the apartment, whether it is a small stain / mark; scratch in floor etc. 2. Even after doing point#1, be ready to forfeit the deposit $$$. It is not only my experience, check with anyone who has moved out in the past couple of years. You will hear the same experience. Not sure if this practice is done in all Avalon community or only with Avalon Shrewsbury. My suggestion is to stay away from Avalon Shrewsbury.

Water main break after the meter, can I not pay for those days

Water main break after the meter, can I not pay for those days?
Their was a water main break at my apt complex. We had no running water for 3 days. Can I tell the management I shouldn't have to pay for those 3 days, its a matter of principle not dollar, they were very rude during the whole situation and the work crew work very short hours during those days as if they could care less if we had water. I live in MA sorry meant rent, they can't make you pay for running water in MA, just hot water.

I'd definitely ask for it. Who fixed the main? The complex or the water company? That is who you have to ask. Since its after the meter I'm assuming the complex. So yes, it is their equipment and they have to fix it immediately, or at least make sure they shut the water off at the meter. Since they didnt do either, they should be paying.

It would cost you about $35.00 for the initial sales kit and shipping costs. E-mail me if you want further information.

How does a degree affect getting a job

How does a degree affect getting a job?
I'm currently studying Entrepreneurship (management+accounting+economics) in a university in the UK and will end up getting a MA(Hons) [which is a bachelors' degree] after all the hard work. Now, after this I'd like to go to the U.S. to work in a managerial position (starting from trainee manager if nothing else).. Now, what kind of degrees do employers require in such positions? i.e. would I have to have a masters degree? And does anyone know a good website for these type of issues/whatever-you-might-describe-it-as?

Why can’t the government break up the big finance companies

Why can’t the government break up the big finance companies?
In the middle 70s the government took on “Ma Bell” which resulted in the telephone giant being split into several smaller companies. This has created competition and led to a broader base of technological initiatives we all benefit from today. Way can’t the government do the same ting to the big finance companies? It has been said that these companies are so big they can not be properly controlled by the government or their own management. Tax payers are paying for their bad habits and mismanagement. Should the tax payer demand that the government break them up as they did with Ma Bell?

Yes, I agree that they should, the ones that have failed anyway and are effectively in government receivership. Why should a company be "too big to fail"? They've hurt the country, the world, their shareholders, all of us, so they can pay themselves huge salaries and bonuses. I say make them "too small to matter," and then if they bankrupt their companies through speculation they'll have to kiss their asses goodbye.

No one is to big to fail, for everyone that does fail there are 3 or 4 to take the place. That is called choice and competition.

Healthcare Management MBA programs in the U.S.A

Healthcare Management MBA programs in the U.S.A?
just turned a senior in college and my major is healthcare management but getting a degree in business administration at American International College in Springfield, MA. i am looking to get my mba and i need some help. i want a school that gives good financial support as well

Basically for an MBA, you need to go to a top 10 schools or it is a waste of money. For helathcare management, you don't need an MBA. many of my friends got MHA( Master of Healthcare Administration), and is doing healthcare mangement at majore hospitals. If you haven't worked before, MHA is easier to get into than MBA. University of Michigan has the #1 program for Healthcare Management and Policy program and will prepareyou well for what you like to do. Plus, if you want, you can apply to the MBA program there as well for just one more year of school. However, that is going to cost you more money.

2
Have you checked the healthcare MBA offered by Independence University? The program is devised to prepare you for a career in healthcare administration and management. This school is accredited by the DETC. Independence University also offers financial assistance with different student loans, scholarships, and grants. This may be the program you are looking for. You may check their website for more details.

3
If you want an MBA, get a job and work for 2-4 years after you graduate. Most MBA programs prefer students with 2-3 years work experience after the first degree. Some accept students right out of college if they have good grades and a high GMAT score. Some MBA programs are designed specifically for new college graduates without work experience. But in those programs you don't get the benefit of learning from other students who have work experience. A lot of valuable learning takes place through class interaction. Before you decide on an MBA program explore the Internet for information on available programs. There is a lot of information available in free public service sites. Some sites are limited to specific countries, such as Germany, UK, or Australia. Some list a small number of select schools, while others may include more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. You can find the program that best fits you. You can search for programs by location (US, Europe, Far East, etc.), by concentration (finance, marketing, aviation management, health management, accounting, etc.), by type of program (full-time, distance learning, part-time, executive, and accelerated), and by type of degree (MBA, MS, Ph.D). In some cases you can select your own criteria and preferences to get a list of universities that satisfy your needs. You can find data on entrance requirements, program costs, program characteristics, joint degrees such as MBA/JD, and much more. Some sites have links to the schools' web sites, or provide email addresses to contact schools of your choice, and send them pre-applications. You can find lists of top schools ranked by various periodicals or ranked by starting salaries of graduates, GMAT scores, and other criteria. Generally you should stay away from any sites that require you to pay to get information or that promise to find scholarships for you or ensure acceptance into a program. Before you provide any personal information to a site, be sure to read their privacy policy and make sure they are not harvesting email addresses for sale.

My ex-boyfriend applied for a pistol permit in Dudley, MA. His criminal record "disappeared"

My ex-boyfriend applied for a pistol permit in Dudley, MA. His criminal record "disappeared".?
There is no record of expungement for a domestic violence arrest. The record "magically" disappeared while he applied for a pistol permit for "hunting". Who has oversight over the management of the police records? I tried asking the state government but they won't even acknowledge with a reply. Even an expungement leaves a trail normally. As it stands now it's as if the record never existed.

An expungement is exactly that. A court ordered expungement is gone forever and a paper trail is very limited. His record is clear as far as the pistol permit is concerned. The court that ordered the expungement has the oversight over it, not police records. Good luck.............

was the case thrown out of court ? money to to right people can do amazing things. what about the original police report? check out these things along with how old he was when he was arraigned , unless he already has lots of hunting experience most hunters use shotguns and rifles or bows to go hunting unless hes hunting a 2 legged human being.a call to the f.b.i. or homeland security I'm sure would stir up some answers-- there is a paper trail somewhere.

arrests can be expunged as long as there is no finding of guilt, an expungement by it's very nature is a removal of all records of the incident so there is nothing magical about it recording an expungement would be self defeating as the idea is to remove all records of an arrest in which there was no conviction since one is innocent until proven guilty. If you are being harassed by this individual report it to your local police, otherwise seek closure and move on!

6
If there was no conviction, then all there would be anyway would be an arrest record, which is not a disqualifier for a permit. An expungement is exactly that. Inquiries into an expunged case yield the same results as if nothing ever occurred.

Northwestern, Harvard, and MIT are obviously top academically ranked schools. Purdue is alright, but definitely out of place in the list.

2
Little known to the public, MIT has amazing sports and law programs. I believe our football and curling teams were ranked in the top 5 of NCAA D-1 sports, in addition to our various other D-3 sports winning numerous titles.

Are there universities/ colleges that offer interdisciplinary degrees that integrate art and technology

Are there universities/ colleges that offer interdisciplinary degrees that integrate art and technology?
I have taken courses for 4 years in graphic design and wish to get a masters degree ( in California) from a field that integrates art, pyschology and sciences/ technology. Is there any way of going about it. I am aiming at a career in future as a graphic designer with relevance to pyschology or art therapy etc. I dont wish to do a bachelors/ masters degree in graphic design because I am well versed with all softwares and image editing techniques and dont want to pursue bachelors at that. for eg NYU offers MA in Graphic Communication Management. are there more like these ? or how can I create my own masters courses in the University

USCD has a program like that - I think integrating music and mathematics.

Architecture is a field/major that integrates art, pyschology and sciences/ technology, with heavy emphasis on graphics technology. There are also specific fields in Industrial Engineering like Ergonomics that integrates art, pyschology and sciences/ technology. For example, office furnitures are ergonomically designed so that a worker can be comfortable and productive. If the design is too comfortable, then the worker would not be productive. If the design is for pure productivity, it will stress out the worker and decrease the consistency and career span of the worker. Interior Design and Fashion Design are usually more art and psychology based, but nowadays they are becoming more science/technology oriented. There is also a growing field in medical arts and design that produce things like artificial limbs or false eyes that require a lot of integrates art, pyschology and sciences/ technology. I know one guy who makes a pretty good living making false eyes because he is only one of few suppliers out there. Then there is always teaching. You can teach art or science. Science teachers are in big demand, and there are more integration of technology in the classrooms. Dealing with kids is an art, and requires a lot of psychological understanding. There are also educational software/technology companies that specialize in making softwares that are fun for the kids but also instructional at the same time, and that requires a lot of integrates art, pyschology and sciences/ technology. In any education related field, it doesn't hurt to get an Education masters degree. Good luck.

Syracuse is fairly cheap over all. At least compared to Boston. Downtown is the hottest place to live, so the rents are getting high there. Northside is ok, but some landlords are starting to raise rents, if they are close to Destiny. I would recommend the Eastwood section too, nice walkable area.

PC Support to Project Management

PC Support to Project Management?
I don't know any programming languages, but I have 7 years of PC support (tiers 1 and 2), some at the state government level. What would I need to get certified in, or go back to school for to transition over to IT project management? Should I just start knocking out IT certifications and get my MA in Finance? Thoughts?

You need a PMP certification to get into Project Management. Masters in management would help too.

2
For project management, you'll want to get PMP certification (Project Management Professional). To obtain this, you have to take some tests, but more importantly, you have to log actual project management hours...quite a bit. Check out the Project Management Institute for more information.

3
A good project manager can manage anything. I would get a Master's Certification in Project Management. That way you can manage construction projects, office upgrade projects, IT projects, etc. You will be more versatile this way. If you want to concentrate on the technical side of things, Project management may not be what you want to do. Remember, they are responsible for costs, hiring, budgets, etc. In other words, they are responsible for EVERYTHING related to a project.

4
I am an IT Project Manager and I went through the same path as you. I went from the help desk to server support, and then managed pc deployments. Next I managed an entire server departed and then I got into IT PM work. I do not have my PMP although I have taken PM classes. Alot of it is paperwork based and metrics related and I can tell you I found my job much more fufilling when I actually did something. You may find the same thing. I would take that leap into management within IT before I branched over to PM work, it will give you experience to pull from. It's alot easier to allocate resources and estimate time when you have a clue what the tasks entail. It also helps you when working with system administrators when you are architecting new systems

MBA: Masters in Business Administration MA: Master of Arts MSc: Master of Sciences

MA and MS are academic degrees. You can stop after these degrees or go on for a PhD. MS is in the sciences while MA is in the arts. A master's in finance would be an MS, not an MA. The MBA is a terminal degree that is meant to be more practical and less theoretical than an MA or MS. The best MBA programs are in the US (actually about 18 out of the top 20 programs are in the US). BusinessWeek and US News & World Reports both rank B-Schools. You can view those rankings on their web pages. In my opinion, the best MBA programs are: Wharton, University of Chicago, MIT, Stanford, Duke, Northwestern, Tuck, Harvard and Columbia
